In this lesson you:
■ look at the Gantt chart for HiTech
■ add the names of those responsible
for each task
■ select and sort the tasks displayed
in the chart

You've used Fast track, the Work breakdown,
the Task list, and the PERT chart to put
information into the HiTech project.
Now it's time to look at the ~Gantt chart~2
for a different view of the project.
A Gantt chart shows tasks and milestones
laid out along a timescale. You see
planned starts and finishes, durations,
constraints, and slack.

This is the PERT chart for your project. Now you
can switch to its Gantt chart.
First, pull down the Graphs menu.

Normally, HPM lists all

you can ask it to list just
tasks, just the milestones,
or only overallocated tasks.

Tasks and milestones are
listed in the order of their
Planned start dates. You can
change the order of the tasks
so that they are listed by
different factors.

At the top of the Gantt chart
is a timescale. HPM auto-
matically divides it into
one-week units. But you can
change the units.

To interpret a Gantt chart,
you should understand a few
of the symbols HPM uses.

Triangles and diamonds
signify milestones. If the
milestone has no slack, its
two triangles are close
together, forming a diamond.

Tasks are represented by
horizontal lines and bars.

If the line extends to the
right of the bar, the task
has some slack. The tasks,
~Recruit~2, ~Train~2, and
~Materials~2 all have slack.

The tasks ~Plan~2 and ~Build~2
have no slack. The line and
bar are the same length (so
the line blends in).

Under each task and mile-
stone name, HPM displays
a ~tag~2 showing its duration
or date. You're going to add
a tag to show the person
responsible for that task.

order to check against a

By specifying a range, you
can also limit the tasks
displayed (such as tasks

Right now, HPM displays
tasks according to their
planned start date. The
tasks are listed in ascend-
ing order; that is, from
earliest to latest date.

to erase this sort order.
